CMS

CMS is one of the four particle physics experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The CMS collaboration comprises approximately 2600 physicists and engineers from 180 Universities and research institutes in 100 [check] countries.

When the LHC begins data-taking in summer 2008, the CMS detector will search for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons at higher energy than any previous collider has achieved.  The LHC experiments are expected to make substantial advances in our understanding of the Higgs boson and the origin of mass, and the concept of Supersymmetry.

The RAL PPD group has had the principal responsibility for the construction of the electromagnetic endcap calorimeter, and has played a major role in developing electronics and software for the CMS silicon tracker detector and in defining the CMS offline computing model.

The group currently comprises 16 people. The physics interests of the group include [startup, Z'/HEEP, SUSY-H, b].
